Since I was 4 years old I have written a journal. I can’t even tell you how many diaries and journals I have stacked in boxes.
They have been a safe zone for thoughts and feelings. A place for creative expression, to say what I can’t speak and to clarify confusing emotions and situations.
They include my to-do lists, goals, dreams, wishes, stories, feelings and the gateway into my secret inner world.
They are a piece of me. They contain my life in metaphors, poems, blatant words and encrypted stories.
As clients will tell you, journaling is often the homework I will offer you to engage in, between sessions. And here’s why.
Writing taps into the part of you that you may not be able to express verbally. If you aren’t confident with expressing yourself vocally, it can feel safer to get it out on paper first.
Writing is a free flow that allows you to shift the whirring thoughts from your mind, onto the page. This is especially helpful when in a transition period, feeling indecisive or experiencing anxiety. It is also great for creative minds needing to transform the ideas from your heart into the living world.
When you write, you are connecting with you higher self, allowing new insights to emerge. And you get to have an ‘aha’ moment with yourself. (I particularly love that about writing)
The act of writing is a letting go. And goodness me, we can all do with a bit of that. It’s a dumping of ‘stuff’ that can no longer remain contained within you if you are to move forward and flow.
The intimacy with self that writing produces is like no other. It is a conversation that is unlimited in its form. We can deceive when we write as well. We can talk in riddles and we can play with rhymes. We can engage the mental aspect only, we can connect with pure emotion or we can draw in the spirit for a deeper truth. We can do it all, all at the same time.
Writing can be fun, expressive, creative, practical, enlightening, reflective.. it can be anything you decide. It’s multidimensional.
So why is this so good for you?
Because it’s a safe outlet for your inner world to come into the space where you are designing your values, altering your path and discovering your inner truths.
Getting it out on paper allows visual clarity for you to be able to make informed choices and understand yourself.
This is the space where true freedom becomes available to you.
And freedom makes us feel good and reminds us of our unlimited potential.
I love seeking out gorgeous journals that make me feel inspired to write in.
It is part of the pleasure of the writing ritual.
I hope this inspires you to dive into the exploratory & intimate world of the written conversation.
